Court Sentences Swedish-Nigerian Woman To 4 Year Jail Term For Child Trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced a Swedish-Nigerian woman, Stephany Isaksson, to four years imprisonment for alleged child trafficking in Akwa Ibom State.

Isaksson, 43, was jailed on two counts of keeping an 18-month-old baby by means of fraud from one Uduak (currently at large), an offence which is contrary to section 13(2)(b) of trafficking in persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 and for receiving the custody of the baby, knowing that the infant would be subject to exploitation.

This is contrary to section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act.

Isaksson was apprehended by the Swedish Embassy authorities when she went to obtain travel documents for the child.

She hails from Mbiayon, in the Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom, and has been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in 2018 for trial.

While ruling on the case, with Charge Number, FHC/UY/108C/2019, Justice Fatun Riman, on count one, sentenced the convict to a term of two years or a fine of 250,000.

The judge, on count two, sentenced Issakson to 2-year imprisonment or a fine of N250, 000.

The sentence will be enforced concurrently.
